Privacy Policy

Jérémy Maisse, publisher of ChessVerse, is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy describes the data collected, its purpose and your rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR – EU 2016/679) and French data protection law.

2. Data Collected

ChessVerse collects no personally identifiable data: no account, no registration, no name, no email address.

The only data processed are anonymous usage statistics via Google Analytics 4 (GA4), integrated through Google Tag Manager:

  • Type and mode of game started
  • Game result (win, loss, draw)
  • Duration and number of moves in a game
  • Aggregated technical data: device type, browser, country (region/country level only)

This data does not allow identification of an individual. No data is combined with advertising information or third-party profiles.

3. Purpose of Processing

The statistics collected are used solely to improve the gaming experience: understanding the most-used modes, detecting potential technical issues and guiding future developments.

4. Legal Basis

Processing is based on the legitimate interest of the publisher (service improvement), the data being strictly anonymous and not used for advertising or commercial purposes. Google's Consent Mode is configured with analytics_storage: granted and all advertising signals disabled (ad_storage: denied).

5. Cookies

ChessVerse uses browser local storage (localStorage) to remember your game preferences (AI difficulty, board orientation, interface language). This data remains in your browser and is never transmitted to our servers. Game statistics (games played, results, daily activity) are also stored locally via the chessverse_stats key to power your profile page. A randomly generated device identifier (chessverse_device_id key) is also stored locally; it is only used in multiplayer mode — see section 6.

Google Analytics 4 may set technical cookies for anonymous audience measurement. No advertising or personalisation cookies are used.

6. Multiplayer Mode (P2P)

In multiplayer mode, the connection between players is established peer-to-peer via WebRTC (Trystero library): moves and game state travel directly between players' browsers, without passing through our servers. Each device generates a random identifier (stored locally) that is exchanged with your pseudo when connecting, so as to recognise an opponent you've already played. The history of wins, losses and draws against that identifier, along with their last known pseudo, is then stored locally in your browser (chessverse_rivals key, visible on your profile page, "Rivals" section). This history stays only on your device and your opponent's; it is never sent to a server.

7. Sub-processors

These sub-processors are located outside the European Union. Transfers are governed by the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.

8. Data Retention

Analytics data is retained for 14 months in Google Analytics, in line with the platform's default settings. Preferences, statistics, the device identifier and rivalry history stored in localStorage persist until manually cleared from your browser; resetting statistics from the profile page does not erase the device identifier or the rivalry history, which must be removed separately by clearing your browser's site data.

9. Your Rights

Under the GDPR, you have the following rights over your personal data: access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability and objection.

Since ChessVerse collects no data that could identify you, it is not possible to locate and associate analytics data with your person.
